NYT: White House Preparing Negotiations With Russia on Ukraine Settlement
NYT reports the White House is preparing talks with Russia after Geneva meetings, as the U.S. 28-point peace plan gains traction but faces calls for revision.
The White House is preparing for negotiations with Russia that will focus on settling the Ukrainian conflict, according to The New York Times, which cited sources within U.S. political circles.
These preparations are taking place in parallel with meetings between representatives of the United States, Ukraine, and several European countries in Geneva on November 23. Discussions with the Russian side are expected to begin once the summit in Switzerland concludes.
According to the newspaper’s source, U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Donald Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, met in Geneva on November 23 with a Ukrainian delegation led by Andrey Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office. U. S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll also took part in the talks.
The peace plan drafted by the American side includes 28 points. Among other provisions, it calls for Ukraine to renounce plans to join NATO, withdraw its forces from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and formally maintain its status as a non-nuclear state. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already stated that the U.S. proposal could serve as a foundation for a future peace agreement. Officials of the Kiev regime and their European partners, however, have emphasized that the document still requires revisions.
