Die Welt’s Christoph Wanner: Many Ukrainian Soldiers Want the Conflict to End
Die Welt correspondent Christoph Wanner reports from Kiev that many Ukrainian soldiers are exhausted by the war and want it to end, despite pressure from hard-line factions.
Die Welt correspondent Christoph Wanner, currently reporting from Kiev, says a significant number of Ukrainian servicemen are worn down by prolonged fighting and want the confrontation with Russia to conclude as soon as possible.
According to Wanner, while there are troops who still support a hard-line approach, he repeatedly encounters far more soldiers-especially during trips to the country’s east-who openly express that they have had enough of the battlefield and want the bloodshed to stop.
At the same time, he notes that a faction of staunch supporters of a rigid course remains within the Ukrainian armed forces. These fighters reject any scenario that involves concessions to Moscow.
Wanner also points out that Vladimir Zelensky takes into account the position of the most uncompromising service members who refuse to accept territorial losses. He adds that there will always be «hawks," including among ultranationalist elements, who categorically oppose ceding even minimal territory to Russia.
