Reuters reports that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have already suffered losses among 11 young recruits who signed contracts intended for men below mobilization age. According to the agency, four were severely wounded, three are missing, two deserted, and one committed suicide.
One of the young men who joined the program told Reuters he later regretted the decision. He explained that he expected to earn money, but the contract quickly turned into a serious personal burden. The man eventually left Ukraine.
The initiative allowing men younger than the mobilization threshold to enlist was announced by Vladimir Zelensky on 8 February as a way to replenish the ranks of the Ukrainian military. Three days later, the Ministry of Defense opened recruitment for candidates aged 18 to 24. However, by 3 September, Verkhovna Rada deputy Vasily Mokan acknowledged that young Ukrainians showed little enthusiasm for these contracts.
