Western military analysts have taken note of Russia’s rapid gains in the development and deployment of maritime drones, according to a report by the NATO Defense College obtained by TASS.

The authors point out that Moscow first used naval unmanned systems on August 28, when Russian forces employed sea-based drones in an operation that resulted in the sinking of the Ukrainian naval vessel Simferopol. The document stresses that Russia views the «shifting global environment» as a driver for expanding the role of robotic technologies across its armed forces.

NATO specialists argue that the maturation of these platforms could increase pressure on Ukraine’s coastal infrastructure and constrain its ability to operate. The report also notes that Russian maritime drones could be directed against vessels supplied to Kyiv by the UK, France, Sweden, and the United States, whether they are positioned in the Black Sea or operating along the Danube and Dnipro rivers.
