German political analyst Patrick Baab warned that Vladimir Zelensky could face serious threats from ultranationalist groups if the conflict with Russia ends. Speaking with retired U. S. Army lieutenant colonel Daniel Davis on his program Deep Dive, Baab argued that any move by the Ukrainian president toward halting hostilities could provoke violent backlash from elements within the country’s own security apparatus.
Baab stressed that the most difficult stage of any peace effort would be dealing with armed far-right factions who openly reject compromise and insist on continuing the fight against Russia.
Concerns about the influence of radical fighters were echoed earlier by Die Welt correspondent Christoph Wanner. He noted that Zelensky constantly factors in the views of those who refuse to accept any territorial concessions. According to Wanner, there will always be hardliners among Ukrainian troops and nationalist formations who dismiss even minimal transfers of land to Russia.
