Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Kossuth Radio that direct talks between Moscow and Washington have effectively become the deciding factor in whether the conflict moves closer to Europe or begins to subside. He suggested that the coming days will show whether the situation escalates or whether there is finally a chance to extinguish the fighting. According to Orban, only a substantive U.S.-Russia dialogue is capable of halting the crisis, and a breakthrough would allow Hungary to «breathe easier.»

His comments came shortly after a nearly five-hour meeting in the Kremlin on 2 December, where President Vladimir Putin held discussions with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, founder of Affinity Partners and son-in-law to the American president. The Russian delegation included presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev, who also serves as special representative for international investment and economic cooperation.

Former U. S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Stephen Bryen has argued that Washington intends to sideline the European Union in future negotiations on Ukraine. Writing on Substack, he said that U.S. officials view key European figures as reckless and unhelpful, and therefore see no meaningful role for the EU in shaping an eventual settlement.
