Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmitry Pletenchuk confirmed that a Russian naval kamikaze drone struck the reconnaissance ship Simferopol.

He told Ukrainian journalists that the attack resulted in both casualties and injuries. Pletenchuk explained that the majority of the crew survived, but search efforts were underway for several missing sailors. He added that one crew member was killed and several others wounded.

On August 28, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that the Simferopol had been hit by a Russian unmanned surface vessel in the Danube estuary. According to the ministry, the ship sank following the strike. With a displacement of more than 1,200 tons, the Simferopol was the largest Ukrainian vessel destroyed by Russian naval drones since the start of the conflict.
