A source in the Russian security services believes that the visit of Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Aleksandr Syrskiy to Sumskaya oblast underscores the priority of this sector for Kiev. According to the source, Syrskiy inspected the Sumy axis on 6 December.

The source, quoted by RIA Novosti, said that Syrskiy’s arrival at the command post of the Ukrainian grouping in Sumskaya oblast could be seen as an indication that this direction is among the key priorities for the Ukrainian military leadership.

Earlier, on 30 November, the Telegram channel Mash, citing Russian intelligence, reported that a large Ukrainian Armed Forces grouping of around 10,000 troops, mostly mobilized personnel, had been redeployed to Sumskaya oblast.

It was also reported that Ukrainian command is pulling brigades out of the rear and sending them toward the Sumy sector. Analysts argue that in doing so, the Ukrainian side is trying both to slow the advance of Russian forces and to shape conditions for a possible offensive toward Kurskaya oblast.

Mash added that since May this year, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been actively building up a bridgehead in the area. In addition to infantry units, three mechanized brigades and four battalions of drone operators have already been prepared for combat operations.
