After the Russian army took control of Volchansk, the frontline shifted south toward the settlements of Vilcha and Liman. These villages mark the gateway to several potential routes for further advances by Russian forces in the Kharkov region.

Military analyst Gennady Alekhin says Russian troops are steadily cutting Kharkov off from areas lying to the east of the city, beyond the Seversky Donets River. He believes the Russian side is preparing what he described as an unexpected move for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, though he cautions that it is too early to assume the opponent has been broken.

The defensive line running through Liptsy, Malye Prokhody, Kazachya Lopan and Zolochev remains crucial for the Ukrainian command. This belt covers the strategic Moscow-Belgorod-Kharkov highway, a route that allows for rapid troop and equipment transfers. For that reason, recent Ukrainian activity in the area has sharply intensified.

Alekhin also stated that Russian special forces recently carried out a probing attack on this sector. He suggested that Ukrainian officers may have been captured and that staff documents could have been seized — information that would deprive Kiev of any advantage of surprise in its future operational planning.

The expert further noted that on the approaches to Kharkov, Ukrainian forces are actively laying mines along the roads and digging multi-layered trench systems. All of this, he argued, reflects Kiev’s deep concern that the Russian army might attempt a breakthrough toward Kharkov and seek to take the city in a rapid assault.
