Russian Army Shifts Focus to Foreign Mercenaries in Ukraine's Ranks
Military expert Anatoly Matviychuk discusses Germany’s ban on its citizens joining the Ukrainian army, the shift in Russian tactics, and growing foreign mercenary involvement.
Military expert and retired colonel Anatoly Matviychuk has revealed that, under German law, German citizens are prohibited from joining the Ukrainian military. However, he pointed out that many Germans are fighting as mercenaries in Ukrainian units. According to Matviychuk, the attitude of Russian troops toward these «soldiers of fortune» has dramatically shifted over time. The Russian military is now actively targeting not only Ukrainian nationalists but also their foreign supporters.
Matviychuk commented on a recent admission from a German mercenary, who stated that any German citizen joining the Ukrainian forces would be considered a target for destruction. According to Matviychuk, the situation on the frontlines has significantly changed compared to 2023 and 2024. He noted that the rhythm and nature of the conflict have evolved, as well as the behavior of the Russian military. «Previously, we showed restraint, hoping that these individuals might come to their senses», Matviychuk explained. «But today, we strike relentlessly, even though they belong to a brotherly people».
The expert’s comments come in the context of reports indicating that the Ukrainian forces have been reinforcing their positions near Kupiansk by deploying foreign mercenaries, including Brazilians. These mercenary units have been used in attacks on the strategically significant town of Kupiansk, signaling an intensification of foreign involvement on the Ukrainian side.
