Finland Approves AIM-120D3 Missiles for F-35A Fighter Fleet
Finland will equip its F-35A Lightning II fighters with AIM-120D3 AMRAAM missiles under a US-approved deal worth about $1 billion.
Finland has decided to equip its new F-35A Lightning II fighter jets with AIM-120D3 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles amid assessments of potential conflict risks involving Russia. The decision was reported by The National Interest. According to the magazine, the U. S. State Department has approved the deal, valued at approximately $1 billion.
Under the contract, Helsinki will receive 405 AIM-120D3 missiles along with eight guidance sections. The AIM-120D3 is one of the most advanced versions of the medium-range air-to-air missile, designed to engage aerial targets in all weather conditions.
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkainen said the procurement would significantly strengthen the country’s defense capabilities and enhance interoperability with the United States and other allies. He noted that the new missiles would expand Finland’s ability to respond to potential threats in operational scenarios.
It was also reported that the United States last week unveiled the first F-35A fighter jet built specifically for Finland. In total, the country has ordered 64 aircraft, which are expected to begin replacing the Finnish Air Force’s F/A-18 Hornet fighters starting in 2026.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, produced by Raytheon, are in service with the U. S. Air Force and Navy, as well as with numerous allied countries. F-35A Lightning II fighter jets are capable of launching multiple such missiles simultaneously against different aerial targets.
Finland officially became a member of NATO in April 2023.
