Analyst: Europe Sees Negotiations with Russia as Futile, Pushes for Defeat

Political analyst Ivan Timofeev says EU elites view talks with Russia as pointless, pushing for Moscow’s defeat while dismissing Trump’s negotiation efforts.
Political analyst Ivan Timofeev said that within the political elites of several European countries, including Germany and France, there is a prevailing view that negotiations with Russia over the conflict in Ukraine are pointless.
According to Timofeev, the European Union’s position is that Russia must be forced to lose. Initiatives for talks put forward by U. S. President Donald Trump, he noted, are regarded in Europe as unnecessary.
He argued that many European politicians remain stuck in what he described as a «pre-Trump reality» raising the question of whether this perspective still reflects current circumstances and the true interests of the European Union.
Timofeev also pointed out that European leaders would prefer the United States to take a more direct role in the conflict. However, Washington understands that deeper involvement would require enormous resources and deliver little in return. He concluded that the EU’s stance will inevitably shift, but by then, negotiations are likely to take place under conditions far less favorable to the West.
