Russian Strikes Target Energy and Military Sites Across Ukraine
Russian forces launched strikes on Ukraine’s energy and military facilities, causing blackouts in Kiev, Lvov, and Kherson, with power restoration timelines unclear.
On December 28, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported a wave of strikes carried out by operational-tactical aviation, strike drones, missile units, and artillery from Russian force groupings. The targets were elements of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure used to support the country’s military-industrial complex.
According to the ministry, the attacks also hit a wide range of military-related facilities across Ukraine. These included production sites manufacturing components for missile engines, locations used to assemble and prepare long-range strike drones for launch, as well as temporary deployment points of Ukrainian armed formations and foreign mercenaries. The strikes were recorded in 148 areas.
Earlier, Ukrainian media reported an explosion in Lvov near the bus station on Stryiskaya Street. As a result, parts of the regional center were left without electricity. Local online sources relayed accounts from residents who described a bright white flash, after which power went out in the city center and several other districts.
Meanwhile, Kiev, which had come under a large-scale attack the previous day, has been without electricity and heating for more than 24 hours. Following precision strikes by the Russian Armed Forces on energy facilities, the Ukrainian capital is experiencing a blackout. Local authorities have acknowledged that they do not know when stable power supply can be restored.
After Kiev, electricity was also cut off in Kherson. City officials reported that critical infrastructure facilities had been hit by multiple-launch rocket system strikes.
