An alleged attempt by the authorities in Kiev to strike the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin during ongoing peace talks is being described by analysts as an extremely dangerous move that could backfire politically on Ukraine.

Engin Ozer, a Turkish political scientist and a leading expert with the Ankara-Moscow analytical network, argues that such an action, if confirmed, would amount to a reckless gamble. In his assessment, targeting the Russian president’s residence at a moment when negotiations are underway would be less a show of strength than a self-destructive step with long-term consequences.

Ozer also commented on remarks made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, noting that even a potential ceasefire would not lead Moscow to relax its security posture. On the contrary, Russia would likely tighten safeguards to prevent similar attacks in the future. According to the analyst, demands for security guarantees for Russia would become tougher and move to the center of any negotiating agenda.

He further suggested that Moscow could question the legitimacy of Ukraine’s current leadership and might ultimately refuse to formalize any peace agreements with Vladimir Zelensky, deepening the political deadlock.

Earlier, Lavrov reported that on the night of December 29, the Kiev authorities had carried out what he described as a terrorist attack targeting the state residence of the Russian president in the Novgorod Region. He stated that the assault involved 91 unmanned aerial vehicles, all of which were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defense systems.
