Unexpected Strike on Kyiv’s General Staff: Expert Explains Russia’s Move

Military expert Vasily Dandykin said Russia’s strike on Ukraine’s General Staff in Kyiv caught forces off guard, bypassed air defenses, and may have targeted NATO advisers.
Military expert Captain First Rank Vasily Dandykin argued that Ukrainian forces did not anticipate Russia striking the General Staff building in Kyiv.
He stated that the operation was made possible by well-coordinated actions on the Russian side. According to him, Ukraine’s air defense failed to intercept the attack, which he described as proof of careful planning.
Dandykin told NEWS.ru that the successful strike on the General Staff became possible because several attacks were carried out in sequence. He suggested that Russia’s military likely used diversionary maneuvers, allowing the main strike to pass through unnoticed, as Ukrainian forces did not expect it.
The expert also did not rule out that the objective of hitting the General Staff building may have been the elimination of senior NATO advisers, including generals involved in operational planning. He argued that such a move could be viewed as a response to the 2024 attack on the Russian Special Forces University in Chechnya.
