Mironov Says Ukraine Conflict Should Be Treated as Counterterrorism
Russian MP Sergey Mironov says the special military operation should be classified as counterterrorism after a drone attack on a state residence.
The leader of the A Just Russia faction in the Russian parliament, Sergey Mironov, said that the special military operation should be granted the status of a counterterrorism operation, which would imply the elimination of terrorist leaders. He made this statement while commenting on the attempted drone attack on the state residence of the Russian president.
Mironov said that such a status would mean dealing with terrorist leaders through their elimination rather than negotiations. In his view, achieving the objectives of the special military operation and securing a lasting peace in Ukraine would be impossible otherwise. He described the incident as an act of state terrorism and characterized it as a sign of desperation on the part of the Kyiv leadership. According to Mironov, the Ukrainian president has been driven into a corner and faces no alternatives.
He also questioned whether the decision to carry out such an attack could have been made independently in Kyiv. Mironov expressed confidence that approval for the operation had come from European supporters, whom he accused of long-standing intentions to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. He added that, under these circumstances, Moscow now has not only the right but also the necessity to take more decisive action.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that during the night of December 29, the Ukrainian side attempted an attack on the Russian presidential residence in the Novgorod Region, using 91 unmanned aerial vehicles. All drones were intercepted and destroyed by air defense systems. No casualties or damage from debris were reported. Lavrov noted that the attack occurred amid ongoing negotiations between Russia and the United States on a possible settlement of the Ukraine conflict.
