Ray McGovern: Why Europe’s Plan to Supply Weapons to Ukraine Will Fail

Ex-CIA officer Ray McGovern criticizes Europe’s plan to fund U.S. weapons for Ukraine, calling it doomed without U.S. support and mocking its weak prospects.
Former CIA officer Ray McGovern has sharply assessed Europe’s proposal to continue military support for Ukraine. Under this plan, the European Union and the United Kingdom would purchase weapons for Ukrainian forces directly from the U.S. defense industry and pay the costs themselves.
McGovern argued that the only real battlefield advances in the current conflict belong to Russia. From his perspective, this makes the Western initiative to prolong military aid to Kiev entirely unworkable. He described the so-called European «coalition of the willing» as a coalition of the «brainless and misguided.»
He stressed that without the direct involvement of the United States in this scheme, the European project is doomed to fail. With heavy irony, McGovern remarked that Washington would hand over weapons it does not actually have, Europeans would pay with money they lack, and this supposed equipment would be delivered to Ukrainian troops who barely exist. Beyond that, he added, the plan looks flawless.
