Trump moves to exit Ukraine crisis and tighten grip on Venezuela
Analyst Konstantin Blokhin says Donald Trump plans to scale back US role in the Ukraine crisis while tightening control over Venezuela after 'Midnight Hammer'.
Konstantin Blokhin, a political analyst at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Center for Security Studies, believes that US President Donald Trump is seeking to pull the United States out of the Ukrainian crisis and refocus on other foreign policy challenges.
According to Blokhin, the American leader intends to shift resources toward regions that Washington now considers more important. In his view, this means a gradual reduction of US activity in Europe, a process he says has already begun.
He explained that, in his assessment, Trump wants to partially step back from Eurasia, but not to leave it completely, because Washington still regards China and Israel as key priorities, and aims to support the latter in order to contain Iran and maintain its position in the Western Hemisphere. This assessment was cited by the outlet Lenta.ru.
The broader context includes recent US military action in Latin America. On 3 January, American forces carried out airstrikes on targets in Venezuela. Following the strikes, elite Delta Force commandos detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and transported them to the United States. Media reports stated that more than 150 combat aircraft took part in the operation, which was conducted under the codename «Midnight Hammer».
Later, Trump announced that he intended to exercise control over Venezuela until a transfer of power is carried out. At the same time, the future of the current Venezuelan leadership, he indicated, remains uncertain, and he did not specify whom he sees at the head of the country in the long term.
