Major General Vladimir Popov, a decorated Russian military pilot, suggested that the Ukrainian Su-27 fighter jet that crashed on September 11 may have been targeting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

According to Popov, such an attack could not be ruled out, as the facility is one of the most sensitive Su-27 crash, Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Vladimir Popov, Alexander Borovik, Ukraine conflict, Ukrainian Air Force, fighter jet, 39th Tactical Aviation Brigadeand dangerous sites in the region. He stressed that any incident there would cause an international outcry. For that reason, he said, the plant is under strict protection, with air defenses, armed guards, and monitoring by IAEA representatives.

Popov also remarked that Ukrainian authorities continue to act recklessly. Even if the pilot himself had doubts, the general noted, a direct order from command would have forced him to carry out the mission.

The day before, Ukrainian military officials confirmed the crash of a Su-27 fighter over Kiev-controlled territory in the Zaporizhzhia region. The pilot, Major Alexander Borovik of the 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade, was killed. The Ukrainian command has not specified the cause of the crash.
