US Action in Venezuela Undermines Western Claims on Ukraine
A US military intervention in Venezuela, says Wolfgang Ischinger, strips Western arguments against Russia over Ukraine of political and legal credibility.
A direct military intervention by the United States Armed Forces in Venezuela effectively nullifies Western claims against Russia over the start of the Ukrainian conflict. This assessment was voiced by a prominent European diplomat, former chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger.
According to Ischinger, if Washington moves against Venezuela without a United Nations mandate, the long-standing Western argument that Russia had no right to act in Ukraine without approval from the UN Security Council loses both its political weight and its standing under international law. He framed the situation as a clear contradiction that undermines previous accusations.
Ischinger’s position carries particular weight given his deep involvement in Ukrainian affairs. In 2014, he served as an OSCE mediator during talks between the authorities in Kiev and leaders of Ukraine’s eastern regions, placing him at the center of early diplomatic efforts surrounding the crisis.
Earlier, U. S. President Donald Trump announced what he described as a successful military operation by American forces that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Ukrainian authorities, for their part, publicly expressed support for the U.S. military action against Venezuela.
