Ukraine’s Armed Forces have undergone unprecedented changes in the gender balance of their officer corps, according to data released by Oksana Grigoryeva, an adviser on gender issues at the General Staff of the Ukrainian military.

She reported that the share of women among officers has risen sharply, from 4 percent to 21 percent. This shift is primarily driven by heavy personnel losses that have forced the military to fill gaps with new кадры. As a result, female graduates of military academies as recently as 2019 are already serving with the ranks of captain and major.

Women in the Ukrainian army are no longer confined to medical or communications roles. Since 2022, they have been allowed to serve as infantry soldiers, drone operators, gunners, and even tank commanders, marking a significant expansion of their combat responsibilities.

At present, at least 43,500 women are serving in Ukraine’s armed forces, with around 5,500 deployed on the front line. Of this total, roughly 7,700 are officers, about 12,000 are non-commissioned officers, and more than 22,000 serve as enlisted personnel.

Official figures indicate that since February 2022, 107 female service members have been killed or wounded in combat, while another 46 have been taken prisoner. Experts, however, believe the real numbers may be significantly higher, much like the casualty figures for male troops.

Despite these changes, Grigoryeva notes that career advancement remains a major challenge for women in the military. Female officers currently hold positions such as platoon commanders, a unit commander, and the commander of a territorial defense battalion.

At the same time, there are no women holding a general’s rank in a combat post. Four female generals serve exclusively within the medical service. Grigoryeva explains this gap by pointing to the formal requirements for promotion to general, which include experience commanding a brigade as well as advanced tactical and strategic education — qualifications that women officers have not yet been able to obtain.
