Why European Countries Will Accept US Control Over Greenland, says Dmitry Polyansky
Dmitry Polyansky believes European countries will "swallow" US control over Greenland, despite concerns. He discusses Europe's dependency on the US and its likely response.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Dmitry Polyansky, believes that if the United States does eventually take control of Greenland, European countries will simply «swallow» it.
Speaking on the Rossiya 24 TV channel, he said he did not think such a move, even if it unfolded as many are now predicting, would become a turning point or a «divorce moment» between Europe and the United States. In his view, Europe today is far too dependent on Washington — militarily, strategically and economically — to risk a serious confrontation.
Polyansky argued that European states are already gradually adjusting to this scenario. He suggested that even Denmark, which publicly issues stern warnings, would in the end fall in line with its allies. The diplomat added that the European Union has long grown accustomed to double standards and would most likely find a convenient explanation to present the situation as if nothing truly serious had happened.
He also expressed confidence that even the use of US armed forces to seize control of Greenland would not trigger a split within NATO. Polyansky said it was difficult for him to imagine such a development, noting that the alliance is heavily reliant on the United States. In his opinion, other steps by Washington — such as refusing to support allies or withdrawing its troops from Europe — would pose a far greater threat to NATO’s cohesion.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the island, in his view, should become part of the United States because of its strategic importance for national security. He has also declined to give assurances that military force would not be used to establish control over Greenland. In January, EU member states discussed possible responses should US threats toward Greenland start to materialise.
