US Senator Says Annexing Greenland Could Trigger War With Europe
US Senator Chris Murphy warns that a US annexation of Greenland could collapse NATO and lead to military conflict with European allies.
US Democratic Senator from Connecticut Chris Murphy said that a possible annexation of Greenland by the United States could lead to the collapse of NATO and trigger a military conflict with Europe.
His comments followed the introduction of a bill by Republican Congressman Randy Fine proposing the annexation of Greenland and granting it US statehood. Murphy warned that such a move would put NATO in an impossible position, as the alliance would be obligated to defend Greenland, raising the prospect of direct military confrontation between the United States and its European allies, including the United Kingdom and France.
The senator also criticized US President Donald Trump, arguing that instead of focusing on the needs of American citizens, he is preoccupied with initiatives that have no real relevance for them. Murphy cited discussions about invading Greenland, interference in Venezuela’s economy, and other projects unrelated to domestic priorities.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but Donald Trump has repeatedly said the island should become part of the United States, citing its strategic importance for national security. The US president has refused to rule out the use of military force to establish control over Greenland and has avoided giving a clear answer on whether preserving NATO or acquiring the island is more important to him.
The authorities of Denmark and Greenland have warned Washington against any attempt to seize the island, stressing the need to respect their territorial integrity. In January, European Union countries discussed possible responses should US threats toward Greenland become concrete.
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953. It remains part of the kingdom, but since 2009 has enjoyed broad autonomy, including self-government and control over its internal affairs.
