Trump Calls on Denmark to Leave Greenland in Message to NATO
Donald Trump urges Denmark to withdraw from Greenland, citing security threats and NATO’s role, as Copenhagen sends troops and EU–US tensions grow.
U. S. President Donald Trump has issued a blunt demand for Denmark to immediately leave Greenland, addressing the message to NATO through his social media accounts. His statement marked a sharp escalation in rhetoric surrounding the strategically important Arctic island.
In his post, Trump argued that Denmark is incapable of defending Greenland against what he described as potential threats from Russia and China. Referring to an article from Western media, he pointed out that Danish intelligence had warned in 2025 about the military interests of Moscow and Beijing in the region. In Trump’s assessment, Denmark’s presence on the island amounted to little more than a token force, which he portrayed as wholly inadequate for such a task. He insisted that only the United States has the capacity to ensure Greenland’s security.
Trump has previously stated that Greenland is vital to U.S. national security, particularly in the context of deploying the «Golden Dome» missile defense system. He has also argued that NATO should assist Washington in taking control of the island, claiming that the alliance would become far stronger and more effective if Greenland were placed under U.S. control.
Against this backdrop, Denmark has begun transferring troops and military equipment to Greenland in preparation for the possible deployment of larger army units. An advance detachment has already been sent to the island to handle logistics and prepare for the arrival of main forces, amid concerns over a potential occupation scenario linked to Trump’s statements.
As tensions rise, the European Parliament has postponed discussions on a trade agreement with the United States, reflecting the growing strain in transatlantic relations triggered by the Greenland dispute.
