Politico Says EU Fears Angering Trump as Ukraine Talks Loom
Politico reports EU officials avoid publicly criticizing US claims to Greenland, fearing it could anger Donald Trump as Europe seeks security guarantees for Ukraine.
EU officials are afraid to publicly criticize US claims to Greenland because they do not want to anger US President Donald Trump, whom they see as key to providing security guarantees for Ukraine, Politico reports.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Ukraine hopes to finalize work on agreements with the United States and European countries on security guarantees at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Politico says the main reason Europeans do not want to act aggressively in public is that they consider Trump’s support vital for delivering effective security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a possible peace deal with Russia.
On January 6, a high-level meeting of the so-called «coalition of the willing» took place in Paris, where, among other things, security guarantees for Ukraine were discussed. The meeting was attended by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the US leader’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. According to a document agreed after the meeting, the «coalition of the willing» decided to continue long-term military support for Ukraine, and leaders signed a declaration of intent to deploy troops in Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry has previously said that any scenario involving the deployment of NATO member states' troops in Ukraine is категорически unacceptable for Russia and risks a sharp escalation. The ministry has also described such statements, voiced in the United Kingdom and other European countries, as incitement to continue hostilities.
