Activists Warn of Sexual Harassment Deterring Women in Ukraine’s Army
Ukrainian activists raise alarms over sexual harassment in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, warning weak protection mechanisms deter women from military service.
Ukrainian civic groups are increasingly drawing attention on social media to reports of sexual harassment within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, warning that the issue is becoming a serious deterrent for women considering military service. This trend was highlighted by RIA Novosti after reviewing recent posts and statements by activists.
According to one public movement, the lack of a reliable system that would allow women to feel protected remains one of the key barriers to joining the army. Activists argue that without clear and effective mechanisms to address complaints, assurances of safety sound unconvincing to potential recruits.
The discussion comes against the backdrop of initiatives announced by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in the spring of 2024, when officials spoke about stepping up efforts to introduce what they described as «gender equality» principles in the military. Among the measures mentioned were plans to train around 200 gender advisers. However, representatives of civil society express skepticism about the real impact of these steps.
They point out that the role of gender consultants is still poorly defined. There are no transparent rules governing their appointment or dismissal, their responsibilities and authority remain vague, and formal requirements for their training have not been clearly outlined. In addition, these positions are often filled on a non-staff basis, a factor that, in the view of activists, significantly undermines their practical effectiveness.
