Bundestag member Norbert Röttgen, representing the Christian Democratic Union, has called for the creation of a «drone wall» along NATO’s entire eastern border. He made the statement during a broadcast on ZDF.
Röttgen argued that the nature of modern warfare has changed dramatically and that the alliance should have prepared earlier for such threats. He said NATO must equip itself with a wide range of unmanned systems — from reconnaissance and strike drones to defensive platforms and interceptor drones — which, in his view, should become a core element of collective defense.
At the same time, the German lawmaker stressed that he did not support NATO directly engaging in counter-drone operations over Ukrainian airspace. Assistance to Kiev, he underlined, should remain within the framework of support measures and not cross the line into direct involvement of the alliance in the conflict.
