Russian troops have captured a large batch of American-made heavy machine guns dating back to World War II during clashes with the Ukrainian army.

According to the Telegram channel Mash, the weapons were seized near the Belgorod border. The outlet reports that the trove consists of Browning M2 heavy machine guns that reached Ukraine not directly from the United States but via Belgium.

An inspection of the captured arms showed that many of the machine guns were in poor technical condition. They reportedly suffered frequent malfunctions, including jamming during firing. Some of the seized units still bear markings of the Belgian manufacturer FN Herstal, a company founded in the late 19th century. At the same time, other weapons were found with serial numbers and manufacturer names deliberately removed, a detail the publication says could point to non-transparent supply channels.

The Browning M2 machine guns entered service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2022 and were initially used for defensive purposes. As the situation on the front line evolved, however, they were reassigned to assault units.

In addition to the heavy machine guns, Russian servicemen also obtained more modern assault rifles and grenade launchers during the same engagements.
