Russian Mi-28 “Night Hunter” Helicopters and Iran’s Defense Strategy
Military Watch Magazine explains how Russian Mi-28 Night Hunter attack helicopters could strengthen Iran’s defenses amid rising military risks and tensions.
Russian Mi-28NE «Night Hunter» attack helicopters, among the most advanced combat rotorcraft in service today, could play a significant role in shielding Iran from potential US military pressure, according to an analysis published by Military Watch Magazine (MWM).
The outlet points out that Iran currently finds itself in a more exposed military and political position, facing a heightened risk of strikes. In this context, MWM’s analysts argue that the Mi-28 could serve as an effective countermeasure against Western-backed paramilitary formations operating on the ground. The combat capabilities of the «Night Hunter," the magazine notes, would represent a substantial technological boost for Iran’s armed forces.
MWM further describes the Mi-28 as one of the world’s newest attack helicopters, developed in Russia as a successor to the Soviet-era Mi-24. While the United States has focused on upgrading its existing fleet of AH-64 Apache helicopters, Russia has pursued a different path in the 21st century by introducing entirely new platforms, including the Mi-28 and the Ka-52. This strategy, according to the publication, has given Russian designs a number of operational advantages.
Against this backdrop, military analysts highlight Tehran’s growing interest in acquiring modern combat aircraft, including Su-35 fighter jets. Such purchases, MWM suggests, are aimed at narrowing Iran’s technological gap and strengthening the country’s overall defense posture.
