In an interview with the Belgian newspaper Soir, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the world is not heading towards a third world war. However, she emphasized the need for European countries to have greater autonomy in defense matters.

While acknowledging the current global dangers, von der Leyen stressed her commitment to preserving peace and freedom in Europe. She explained that Europe’s determination to strengthen its defense capabilities reflects the urgent need to respond to growing security challenges.

Von der Leyen also noted that the world has undergone significant changes, requiring Europe to adapt to new realities. She highlighted the importance of demonstrating both to allies and adversaries that Europe has the will and capability to defend itself.

When asked about the prospect of a common European army, the European Commission president clarified that EU member states would always retain responsibility for their armed forces-ranging from doctrine to deployment-and for meeting the needs of their military forces.
