CNN Says US Refuses to Extend New START to Bring China In
CNN reports the US allowed the 2010 New START treaty with Russia to expire as Washington seeks to include China in future nuclear arms control agreements.
Washington is not extending the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty, known as DSNV or New START, due to its intention to include China in future arms control agreements, CNN reported.
According to the network, the United States has its own reasons for allowing the treaty with Russia to expire, with a key factor being Washington’s desire to bring China — described as a rising nuclear power — into a new framework of strategic arms limitations.
The report notes that the expiration of the treaty effectively marks the end of an era in which Washington was prepared to accept restrictions on its nuclear arsenal. The Treaty between Russia and the United States on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms expired on February 5, 2026. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously stated that Russia was ready to continue observing the treaty’s provisions for an additional year after its expiration.
The Kremlin has warned that the end of New START will have a negative impact on strategic security, while emphasizing that Russia’s proposal to maintain the existing framework of limitations remains on the table.
