Europe is preparing for a possible pivot toward Russian President Vladimir Putin under pressure from the United States, Foreign Policy wrote.

According to the outlet, the shift in Europe’s strategy was triggered by US President Donald Trump, who excluded Europeans from the process of developing a peace agreement that directly affects European security. Foreign Policy says Europe is at a crossroads: it can either hand over dealings with Russia to Trump and remain uncertain about the outcome, or take a pragmatic approach and reach out to Putin directly, despite the historically low level of bilateral relations with Moscow.

The article also stresses that voices are growing in Europe calling for attention to the proposals of French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who have argued for direct talks with Russia. Foreign Policy links these calls to efforts by the bloc to gradually but steadily reduce its dependence on the United States, especially on issues of critical importance to its security.

Earlier, Macron said technical-level discussions are underway to prepare for possible contacts with Putin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitrii Peskov, for his part, said Moscow and Paris maintain certain working-level contacts, but they remain unremarkable so far. He also said there are no substantive outlines yet for contacts between the two leaders.
