Investigation Launched Over Faulty Radio Purchase for Ukrainian Military
Ukrainian investigators probe a military officer over the purchase of unusable radios for the Armed Forces, costing nearly $20,000 and failing combat standards.
An investigation has been opened into the head of communications at a military unit in Ukraine’s Chernigov Region after a purchase of radio equipment for the Armed Forces of Ukraine turned out to be unusable. According to Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation, the case involves 20 portable radios with a total value of roughly $18,600.
The probe was conducted jointly with the Security Service of Ukraine. Investigators found that the officer failed to properly carry out his official duties and, between October and December 2024, bought the radios from a private supplier without checking their technical specifications or quality. Nearly $20,000 was spent on the procurement.
As a result, the military unit received equipment that did not meet established standards and lacked the required level of protection. Because of this, the radios could not be used in combat operations.
The official has been charged with negligent performance of military service that led to grave consequences and was committed under martial law. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to eight years.
