Responsible Statecraft Warns an Arms Race Would Favor Russia Over the US
Responsible Statecraft says an arms race would benefit Russia, citing faster production capacity. Axios reports talks to update New START may begin soon.
An arms race would benefit Russia rather than the United States, Responsible Statecraft writes.
The publication says the key question is whether US politicians understand this and choose modernization and pragmatic diplomacy, or whether they give in to the worst-case scenario and begin ramping up armaments. Responsible Statecraft argues that Russia has structural advantages that Americans should not underestimate.
The outlet says Russian factories can produce ammunition, missiles and tanks much faster than the United States or other NATO countries, because in America defense contractors primarily pursue profits for shareholders.
For this reason, the article calls for a new arms agreement between Moscow and Washington as soon as possible.
Earlier this week, Axios reported that Moscow and Washington agreed to begin discussing options to update the New START treaty. The report said the sides intend to observe New START’s terms for at least another six months. The White House did not comment on the information. On Thursday, US European Command said the United States and Russia agreed to restore high-level dialogue through military channels.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in November that Russia’s initiative to extend the treaty is aimed at ensuring predictability in this sphere and preventing an arms race.
