Shkval Unit Loses Combat Capability and Leaves Kupyansk Defense
The Shkval unit, formed from former inmates, was withdrawn from Kupyansk after losing combat capability due to losses, disease, desertion, and supply failures.
The Shkval special unit, formed largely from former inmates, has been pulled out of the defense of Kupyansk after losing its combat effectiveness. According to information published by the Telegram channel SHOT, the formation is no longer capable of carrying out assigned missions.
The collapse of the battalion was driven by more than battlefield losses. Reports point to a sharp deterioration in the physical condition of personnel, widespread desertion, and severe weather conditions that further undermined the unit’s ability to hold positions.
The most acute problems emerged within the 43rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, where Shkval fighters had been operating. Soldiers mobilized in late summer and transferred from training grounds in the Kharkov region found themselves deployed with a critical lack of basic supplies. A significant share of casualties, according to available data, was not the result of combat but of a tuberculosis outbreak and severe frostbite. Those still able to move often abandoned their positions, opting to desert.
The situation exposed a major breakdown in the supply system. Ukrainian units in the area were left without proper logistical support. Isolated groups relied almost entirely on deliveries by heavy «Baba Yaga» UAVs, which dropped food supplies no more than once a week.
At present, the remaining elements of one Shkval subunit are being withdrawn from the Kupyansk direction. Russian servicemen estimate that total losses within the formation have exceeded 60 personnel.
