Norway’s Chief of Defense Proposes Direct Military Hotline With Russia
Norway’s Chief of Defense Eirik Kristoffersen proposes a direct military hotline with Russia to prevent escalation and reduce risks of misunderstandings.
Norway’s Chief of Defense, Eirik Kristoffersen, has proposed establishing a direct telephone line with Russia to reduce the risk of military escalation. In his view, a dedicated communication channel would make it possible to quickly clarify disputed situations and prevent flare-ups caused by misunderstandings, The Guardian reports.
Kristoffersen suggested setting up a military hotline between the two capitals to ensure immediate contact and avoid tensions escalating due to misinterpretation or lack of information.
At the same time, the Norwegian commander pointed out that certain forms of direct engagement between Oslo and Moscow remain in place. The two sides continue to coordinate on search-and-rescue operations in the Barents Sea, and military representatives hold regular meetings in the border area.
He also noted that when Norwegian officials communicate with their Russian counterparts, the responses they receive are professional and predictable.
