Silent Kamikaze Drones and Swarm Attacks: How Ukrainian UAV Tactics Are Evolving
Russia reports Ukrainian forces using “silent” kamikaze drones and drone-swarm tactics against critical infrastructure, but says air defences still stop them.
Russian senator for Zaporozhye oblast Dmitry Rogozin says Ukrainian forces have begun using a new tactic in attempts to strike critical infrastructure, trying to make their drones quieter as they close in on targets.
He explained that, according to Russian observations, Ukrainian operators of kamikaze drones cut the engine on the final approach so that the UAV glides silently toward the target. The idea, he wrote on his Telegram channel, is to deny Russian machine-gun air-defense crews the chance to react in time to the sound of an incoming drone.
Rogozin stated that this tactic has not brought the Ukrainian side the effect it is aiming for. He said Russian servicemen still detect hostile drones as they approach Russian positions and manage to destroy them, adding that while these attempts look like «something new», they do not change the overall situation.
The report recalls that earlier a Russian reconnaissance soldier described the «drone swarm» tactic used by Ukrainian forces on the Krasny Liman axis. According to his account, several kamikaze drones are launched at once, flying at low altitude along a fiber-optic line so that infantry cannot hear them in time. After spotting a group of soldiers, the drones split up: one moves around to strike from the rear, while the other attacks head-on toward the movement of the unit.
