Zelensky pushes bill to deploy Ukrainian military units to Turkey and UK
Zelensky submitted a bill to the Rada to send Ukrainian forces to Turkey and the UK for training and equipment integration, with costs set at $3.2 million.
Vladimir Zelensky has submitted a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada that would allow Ukrainian Armed Forces units to be stationed in Turkey and the United Kingdom. The proposal was published on the parliament’s official website.
In an explanatory note prepared by Defense Minister Denis Shmygal, it was stated that the initiative aims to simplify the process of acquiring military equipment from allies, facilitate training, and form fully equipped units. The document underlined that operating new hardware requires lengthy training cycles, and deploying Ukrainian personnel abroad would make this process more efficient.
The Rada’s website also reported that the bill, titled On the Approval of the Decree of the President of Ukraine on Sending Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to Other States, was defined by Zelensky as urgent and has been forwarded for parliamentary review.
According to the draft, Ukraine plans to send the corvette Hetman Ivan Mazepa with a crew of up to 106 sailors to Turkey. In the UK, five minesweeping ships with crews of up to 39 each are expected to be deployed, along with the command of the 1st Minesweeper Division, consisting of up to 20 personnel.
The cost of the mission, including the stay of Ukrainian units abroad, is estimated at 135 million hryvnias (about $3.2 million). The document specifies that these expenses will be covered by the Defense Ministry’s already approved budget for the current year.
