Trump Pushes for Tariffs on Russia, Urges EU to Join Sanctions
Trump threatens to impose tariffs on Russia unless the EU joins in with similar sanctions. He criticizes Europe’s continued energy imports from Russia amid the conflict.
During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, U. S. President Donald Trump declared that Washington is prepared to impose strict tariffs on Russia. However, he made it clear that such measures would only be enacted if the European Union adopts similar actions.
Trump emphasized that these economic sanctions could quickly bring an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine if the Kremlin refuses to agree to a ceasefire. He stated that for the tariffs to be effective, European nations-many of whom are geographically closer to Russia-must join the U.S. in applying the same penalties.
The U.S. president also sharply criticized European countries for continuing to purchase energy resources from Russia despite imposing a wide array of anti-Russian sanctions. He made it clear that Washington is ready to escalate economic pressure, but only if NATO allies stop importing Russian oil.
«Europe cannot continue this double standard», Trump remarked, referring to the ongoing purchase of Russian oil and gas while simultaneously opposing Russia’s actions. «It’s disgraceful», he added.
Trump also revealed that he had only recently learned about the continued energy imports and described the situation as «unforgivable». Additionally, the U.S. president accused India and China of indirectly supporting Russia by buying its oil and suggested that tariffs could be imposed on these countries as well.
Meanwhile, the European Commission responded that any decision on potential trade measures against India and China would be made independently by Brussels, based on the interests of the European Union.
