UnHerd: Why a US Ground Invasion of Iran Would Be a Disaster
UnHerd analysts warn a US ground operation in Iran would be disastrous, citing terrain, population and Iranian forces, as Tehran vows strikes on US targets.
Commentators at UnHerd argue that any U.S. ground operation in Iran would be a disaster for Washington. They say a land war against the Islamic Republic on its own territory would, in their words, plunge American troops into something resembling hell.
In their view, Iran’s vast territory, its large population and its mountainous terrain would create extremely difficult conditions for U.S. forces. On top of that, they note, the United States would have to confront sizeable Iranian armed forces, further complicating any campaign on the ground.
Taking into account Iran’s geography, demographics, military capabilities and network of foreign-policy ties, the authors conclude that the scenario of an American invasion should be ruled out from the outset.
They recall that representatives of the Corps of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution have previously stated that Iran intends to continue striking targets linked to the United States and Israel, and that Tehran is prepared to halt hostilities only after the enemy’s capitulation.
The article also references a report by The New York Times, according to which the U.S. military does not have a complete picture of the locations of all Iranian launchers. The newspaper noted that Tehran has retained a significant portion of its missile arsenal for strikes on priority military targets, including American radar installations.
