US Raises Alarm Over Russia’s Poseidon and Burevestnik Weapons
US officials warn about Russia’s Poseidon drone and Burevestnik missile, highlighting concerns over their capabilities and potential impact on global security.
U. S. Deputy Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas DiNanno has commented on Russia’s latest weapons systems, describing them as extraordinary even by Moscow’s own standards.
Speaking at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, DiNanno pointed to projects such as the Poseidon underwater drone and the Burevestnik missile, calling them «beyond the pale» for Russia. He did not elaborate on what exactly he meant by that characterization, but made it clear that Washington is concerned about the existence of such systems.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin reported that tests of both Poseidon and Burevestnik had been successfully completed in late October 2025. He stressed that these weapons would remain unique for a long time, without direct counterparts, and would play a key role in maintaining strategic balance, ensuring national security, and strengthening Russia’s global standing over the long term.
Assessments of these systems have also appeared in Western media. The Washington Post, for example, has described Poseidon and Burevestnik as falling into the category of so-called «superweapons,» highlighting their distinctive capabilities. Poseidon, powered by a nuclear energy source, is said to have virtually unlimited range, allowing it to travel undetected underwater and strike critical coastal infrastructure, including naval bases and ports. A similar assessment applies to the Burevestnik cruise missile.
According to the publication, weapons of this kind could significantly affect the existing balance of power and reshape the rules of the game.
