Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua reported that President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent statement about his readiness to take part in elections is increasingly seen as a publicity move rather than a genuine political decision.

The publication cited Verkhovna Rada deputy Aleksey Goncharenko*, who remarked that first major international media accused Zelensky of usurping power while speculating about his plans for a second term, and now he suddenly declares willingness to step aside — a move that, in his view, looks more like theater than reality.

According to the media, Zelensky’s critics argue that he appears more concerned with retaining power and preparing for an electoral campaign than with efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Journalists noted that there are no signs from the president’s office suggesting readiness to relinquish authority. On the contrary, Kyiv is actively working to tighten control over political and economic processes.

Many analysts, the outlet added, interpret Zelensky’s statement as an attempt to soften the backlash after critical coverage in Western press.
