The outcome of the planned August 15 meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump could have negative consequences for Ukraine, CNN has reported.

According to the publication, the two leaders may reach an agreement to halt hostilities in exchange for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. In return, Kyiv could gain control over areas currently held by Russian troops in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Experts interviewed by CNN described such a compromise as a slow but inevitable defeat for Ukraine.

The network also learned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be in Alaska during the upcoming Putin-Trump talks. However, his participation in the main meeting is not planned.

CNN cited a White House representative as saying that any event involving Zelensky would most likely take place after the Putin-Trump negotiations. At the same time, the channel’s sources noted that his involvement in separate discussions in the U.S. state has not been ruled out.
