North Korea Adopts Law Allowing Nuclear Strike if Leader Threatened
North Korea allows automatic nuclear response if Kim Jong Un is threatened, aiming to boost deterrence as tensions rise globally.
North Korea has enshrined in its constitution the right to use nuclear weapons in the event of a threat to the life of its leader Kim Jong Un, Yonhap reported.
According to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, the updated provisions allow for an automatic nuclear response if the command and control system of the country’s nuclear forces comes under threat from what are described as «hostile forces». In such a scenario, the use of nuclear weapons could be carried out immediately, without additional authorization procedures.
The changes come amid rising global tensions, including developments in the Middle East. Pyongyang believes the new measures will strengthen its deterrence, particularly against the United States, and help maintain the stability of its leadership during potential crises.
In late March, North Korea conducted ground tests of an upgraded solid-fuel engine for intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching U.S. territory. Kim Jong Un personally observed the tests and emphasized their importance for advancing the country’s strategic capabilities. While key specifications remain undisclosed, media reports indicate the engine can generate thrust exceeding 2,500 kilonewtons.
