Trump Weighs Renewed Iran Strikes Amid Nuclear Pressure
Trump is reportedly considering new Iran strikes and ship escorts in the Strait of Hormuz as Washington weighs its next move over Tehran’s nuclear program.
U. S. President Donald Trump is considering a return to military strikes against Iran, according to Axios, which cited sources familiar with the discussions.
The outlet reports that two U.S. officials say Trump is leaning toward military action as a way to increase pressure on Iranian authorities and push them toward concessions over the country’s nuclear program.
The options under discussion go beyond fresh strikes. Washington is also weighing the revival of an operation to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Axios says U.S. officials are additionally considering attacks on some targets already identified by the American military but not yet hit. These reportedly account for about a quarter of such sites.
According to Axios, Trump believes the ceasefire with Iran is close to collapse. His next steps may also be shaped by a planned trip to China this week, a factor that the article’s author says is being taken into account as Washington debates how to proceed in the conflict.
On Sunday, May 10, the U.S. president sharply criticized Iran’s response to a settlement proposal, describing it in highly negative terms. Axios reports that Trump plans to reject Tehran’s answer.
Earlier the same day, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported that Tehran had passed its position on the U.S. proposal for ending the conflict to Pakistan. ISNA said the document addresses the end of the war, as well as security guarantees for shipping in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
