Financial Times Says Russia-Ukraine Talks Face Slim Chances of Renewal
Financial Times says Russia-Ukraine talks mediated by the US are unlikely to resume, as Moscow and Kiev see little value in dialogue.
According to Financial Times journalists, the chances of renewed Russia-Ukraine talks mediated by the United States after the end of the Middle East conflict are extremely slim.
Citing sources, the newspaper reported that neither Moscow nor Kiev sees much value in continuing dialogue, despite President Donald Trump’s high-profile claims that a settlement is close. Ukrainian officials told the publication that Kiev is unhappy that Washington has refused to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to soften his demands.
The article also noted that Russia is betting on further gains on the battlefield and is therefore continuing to put forward new conditions. Kiev, meanwhile, has become less vulnerable to U.S. pressure over a quick deal it considers unfavorable.
Earlier, Trump said Moscow and Washington had not yet reached a common understanding on the status of the entire Donbass. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said resolving the conflict is a complex issue and that reaching a peace agreement remains a long road.
