This autumn, Russia is set to draft 135,000 young men into military service. The figure was announced by Colonel General Evgeny Burdinsky, head of the General Staff’s Main Organizational and Mobilization Directorate, in an interview with the newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda.

According to Burdinsky, roughly a third of the recruits will be sent to training units and military schools, where they will study modern equipment and acquire specialized skills. Once their training is complete, the new servicemen will be assigned to units in line with their qualifications.

Draft commissions will begin their work on October 1, the general said, with the first groups of conscripts departing regional collection points on October 15.

The autumn draft will run through the end of December, but in the Far North and equivalent territories the schedule is different. There, the call-up will start a month later, on November 1. In 24 northern districts, recruitment traditionally takes place only in spring because of the harsh climate.
