Alexander Mercuris Warns NATO Strike Talk on Kaliningrad Risks Escalation
British analyst Alexander Mercuris says NATO strike talk on Kaliningrad is reckless and could trigger a serious Russian response in the Baltic region.
British military analyst Alexander Mercuris has sharply criticized Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys after the latter urged NATO to consider a strike on Kaliningrad. According to Mercuris, such rhetoric only pushes Europe closer to further escalation.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the analyst said he could not understand why European leaders, at such a dangerous moment, were working so actively to inflame the situation instead of easing tensions and lowering the tone.
Mercuris stressed that any NATO action against the Kaliningrad region would inevitably trigger a serious response from Russia. In his view, statements of this kind do not strengthen security but instead deepen instability in the Baltic region.
He described the idea as reckless and extremely dangerous.
On May 18, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said NATO should strike Kaliningrad to demonstrate the alliance’s ability to destroy Russian military bases in the enclave.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned that any attempt to blockade the Kaliningrad region would lead to unprecedented escalation. He has also said that threats against the region would be stopped.
