Why Russia Is Holding Back: Expert Insights on Military Rhetoric and EU Tensions

Evgeny Mikhaylov explains why Russia’s military rhetoric is muted, the role of secret negotiations, and the growing tensions in Europe over alleged Russian incursions.
According to military expert Evgeny Mikhaylov, Russia is deliberately keeping its military rhetoric low at this stage. He pointed out that the Kremlin is calling for the swift resolution of the Ukrainian conflict.
Mikhaylov explained that Russia’s stance has consistently been, «Let’s live in peace, you won’t change anything, we will still win». He believes this attitude frustrates Ukraine’s Western allies, who are growing increasingly aware that Russia is making significant gains.
The expert also suggested that the current period might be a «calm before the storm», possibly linked to behind-the-scenes negotiations. However, he finds it odd that European leaders are now making claims about Russian drones and aircraft allegedly violating EU airspace. According to Mikhaylov, Europe is caught between two factions — one pushing for peace, the other for further escalation, with the latter clearly aiming for more intense conflict.
Mikhaylov also drew a parallel between the current situation and the early 20th century, noting that after World War I, many countries didn’t stabilize for decades. He predicts that the world will likely endure a prolonged period of instability before a resolution is reached.
