Washington is unlikely to invoke Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty if the Baltic states decide to stage provocations against Russia, former Pentagon adviser Douglas McGregor has said.

Speaking on YouTube, McGregor dismissed the idea that the United States would use nuclear weapons in such a scenario. He argued that claims about Washington launching a nuclear strike on Russia if Article 5 were triggered over actions by Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia are absurd. In his view, the United States would not take that step, raising the broader question of what Washington could realistically do instead. His answer was that its options would be extremely limited.

McGregor said Russia holds a serious military advantage. He believes the United States would find itself in a losing position if it were drawn into a prolonged missile confrontation.

According to the analyst, Russia is capable of producing more missiles, and China can do the same. He added that China would certainly not stand aside and watch the United States attempt to destroy or suppress Russia.

Several days earlier, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service reported that the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was preparing a new series of terrorist strikes against Russian rear regions. According to the agency, Kiev could use the territory of the Baltic states to launch drones in order to shorten their flight time to targets.
